The sections are designed to fit a hatch frame of the boat. A cable or chain is inserted into the holes to lock the boat. However, this device requires a stationary support to secure the boat. It is sometimes difficult to find a suitable stationary support. Furthermore, the device does not prevent the paddle from being stolen.
US2006 / 0032276 discloses a safety device for locking a paddle or other object having an axle to a land vehicle, such as a car, comprising a sleeve which can be locked in a closed position by means of a cable and a lock housing. The locking device is used for locking the paddle to a stand on a roof of a car during transport of the paddle on the car. The locking device comprises a cable for combining the cable with the roof rack on the car roof. A cuff is provided on the locking device to secure and secure the paddle to the vehicle roof. This locking device secures the paddle to the roof rack and prevents the paddle from being stolen. This locking device can not be used to prevent theft of the sea vessel. OBJECTS AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The object of the present invention is to provide an improved device suitable for locking a sea vessel, such as a kayak or canoe.
This object is achieved with a device as defined in claim 1.
The device comprises two elongate and rigid elements rotatably connected to each other so that a rotation shaft is formed at a distance from the ends of the elongate elements, and two end portions of the elements on one side of the rotation shaft are formed as a first clamping device for clamping a part of the vessel. and two end portions of the elements on an opposite side of the axis of rotation are formed as a second clamping device for clamping the elongate object, the clamping devices being movable between an open position and a closed position upon rotation of the elongate elements, and a locking means arranged to enable locking the elongate elements in a fixed position relative to each other and thereby locking the first and second clamping devices in a fixed position and thus locking the elongate object to the sea vessel.
The device comprises only two elongate elements, and possibly a separate padlock.
Thus, the device is simple and inexpensive to manufacture. Furthermore, the device is easy to use.
The device is elongated but thin, has low weight and is thus easy to fit in a small elongated sea vessel, such as a kayak or canoe. One end of the device is clamped in the craft, for example, to a seat of a boat or canoe, or to the edge of an opening in a kayak, and the other end is clamped to an elongate object for propelling the craft, to 20 25 30 35 example a paddle or oar. The device is then locked in a clamped position, for example by means of a padlock. The device according to the invention makes it impossible for a thief to use the craft for two reasons: the elongate object used to propel the craft, for example a paddle or oar, is locked to the craft and therefore cannot be used, and the device blocks the opening of the craft and makes it difficult or impossible for the thief to get into the craft. The locking device according to the invention does not require any stationary support to secure the vehicle.
According to an embodiment of the invention, one of the elongate elements is provided with a waist and the other elongate element is provided with an opening for receiving said waist of the second element and thereby rotatably connecting the elements to each other.
The elements are rotatable relative to each other about an axis of rotation through the elements. By this arrangement, the elements are rotatably connected in a simple manner, without the need for any additional part, such as a shaft. Furthermore, it is easy and quick to disassemble the parts when the locking device is not in use, and easy to assemble the elements when the locking device is to be used. By disassembling the elements, the space needed to store the locking device is minimized.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the end parts of the first clamping device are provided with projecting parts to facilitate gripping of the vessel. For example, the ends of the first clamping device are bent inwards in a direction towards each other. Preferably, the projecting parts are designed as hooks to facilitate gripping of the craft.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the end portions of the second clamping device are provided with projecting means which extend towards each other to enclose the elongate object. The protruding members help to hold the elongate object in a clamped position. In an embodiment of the invention, the projecting means form parts of the locking means.
The locking means may further comprise a padlock for locking the projecting means to each other.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the projecting means are provided with through holes for receiving a lock, e.g. a padlock, thereby locking the elements in a fixed position relative to each other.
According to an embodiment of the invention, one of said projecting means is provided with at least one through hole and the other projecting means is provided with a plurality of through holes, in order to enable the size of the space between the end parts of the second clamping device when the second clamping device is in a locked position. The width of the paddle or the shaft of the oar can differ between different types of paddles and oars. This embodiment makes it possible to adapt the second clamping device to the width of the elongate object.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the elongate elements are made of aluminum.
Aluminum is light and relatively easy to shape. Thus, this embodiment makes the locking device easy and inexpensive to manufacture. Alternatively, the device may be made of a fiber-reinforced polymer.

Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiments of the Invention Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a first sea vessel 1a and a locking device 3 for locking an elongate object 5 to the sea vessel 1 according to an embodiment of the invention.
The sea vessel 1a in the described example is a kayak which has an opening 7 in the middle of the vessel 1a. The opening 7 is delimited by an edge part 9. In this example the elongate object 5 is a paddle provided with two flat parts for driving the vessel 1. two flat parts are connected by a rod. The locking device 3 is used for locking the paddle 5 to the edge part 9 of the opening 7. Thereby the paddle 5 is firmly fixed in the vessel 1a and the paddle 5 is prevented from being removed from the vessel 1a due to wind or theft. Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of a second sea vessel 1b. Sea vessel 1b in this example is a canoe and the figure shows how the locking device 3 can be used to lock a paddle 5 to the canoe. The canoe has a large opening 7. The canoe 1b has a plurality of seat boards 10 extending between opposite sides of the canoe. The locking device 3 is used to lock the paddle 5 to one of the seat boards 10. Thereby, in the same way as in figure 1, the paddle 5 is firmly fixed in the vehicle 1b.
Fig. 3 shows the device 3 in an open position and Fig. 4 shows the device 3 in a closed position. The device 3 comprises a first rigid elongate element 20 with a first longitudinal axis L1 and a second rigid elongate element 22 with a second longitudinal axis L2. The first elongate member 20 includes a first 24a end portion and a second end portion 25a. The second elongate member 22 includes a first end portion 24b and a second end portion 25b. The two elongate elements 20 are 22 rotatably connected to each other so that an axis of rotation R is formed. The axis of rotation R is spaced from the first end portions 24a-b and the second end portions 25a-b of the elongate members and extends through both of the elongate members. The axis of rotation R may be located at the same distance from each of the first end portions 24a, 24b and the second end portions 25a, 25b of the first and second elongate members. The elongate elements 20, 22 are releasably connected to each other to make it easy to disassemble the unit when not in use, for example during transport, thus reducing the space needed to store the device.
The elongate elements 20, 22 are made of a lightweight material, such as aluminum, stainless steel, or a composite material, such as glass fiber reinforced polymer or carbon fiber. An inner surface of the elongate elements 20, 22 may comprise a protective layer of an elastic material to protect the elongate object 5 and the edge of the vessel 1 from wear. The elastic layer is, for example, a rubber material, fabric material, etc.
The two end portions 25a-b on one side of the axis of rotation R are formed as a first clamping device 26 designed to clamp a part of the craft, for example, the edge or the seat board. Thereby the device 3 is firmly connected to the craft 1a-b. The two end portions 24a-b on an opposite side of the axis of rotation R are formed as a second clamping device 27 for clamping the elongate object 5, for example, to a paddle, with that object. The clamping devices 26, 27 are movable between an open position, as shown in Fig. 3, and the oar, etc. Thereby the device 3 is fixedly elongately connected in a closed position, as shown in Fig. 4, when rotating the elongate elements 20, 22 about the axis of rotation R. The end portions 25a, 25b of the first clamping device 26 are provided with projecting portions 28a-b, for example designed as hooks, for gripping the craft. The projecting parts can be provided by bending the outer ends of the elongate elements 20, 22. The projecting parts 28a-b project away from the first and the second longitudinal axis L1, L2. The end portions 24a-b of the second clamping device 27 are provided with projecting means 29a-b which extend towards each other to enclose the elongate object. The projecting members 29a-b project away from the first and the second longitudinal axis L1, L2. In this embodiment, the protruding member 29b extends a distance longer from the elongate member 22 than the protruding member 29a extending from the elongate member 22 to enable the protruding members to overlap in the closed position to thus facilitating locking of the device. In the closed position, the projecting means 29a-b of the second clamping device extend towards each other, thereby enclosing the elongate object 5. The projecting means 29a-b are provided with one or more through holes 30 arranged to receive a lock, e.g. a padlock, and to lock the positions of the first end portions 24a, 24b of the second clamping device 27 when the device is in the closed position as shown in Figure 4. Thereby, the position of the second end parts 25a, 25b of the first clamping device 26 is also locked. Thus, by cooperation between the first clamping device 26 and the second clamping device 27, the elongate element 5 is attached to the vessel 1a-b.
The projecting means 29a-b form a locking means arranged to allow locking of the elongate elements in a fixed position relative to each other and thereby locking the first and the second clamping device in a closed position. It should be understood that other types of locking means may be used.
In the closed position, both end parts of the first and the second clamping device extend towards each other, and thus enclose the elongate object 5 or the edge of the vessel 1a. In the described embodiment, the first end part 24a is provided with a through hole and the second the end part 24b is provided with three through holes 30 to enable adjustment of the distance between the end parts in the closed position and thereby make it possible to adapt the device to paddles in different sizes. It should be understood that the end portions 24a, 24b may be provided with different numbers of through holes 30 for locking the first and second clamping devices 26, 27.
In Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, a perspective view of the first elongate member 20 and the second elongate member 22 is shown when separated from each other. The first elongate member 20 includes an opening 32 in the form of a through hole disposed between the first 24a end portion and the second end portion 25a. The opening 32 is intended to receive the second elongate member 22. The length of the opening 32 is slightly larger than the width of the second elongate member to allow the first elongate member to be inserted through the opening. The second elongate member 22 includes a waist 34 between the first end portion 24b and the second end portion 25b. The width of the opening 32 is slightly larger than the width of the waist and smaller than the width of the end portions 25b, 24b to hold the second elongate member 22 in position in the hole. This construction makes it easy to assemble and disassemble the device.
The first elongate member 20 and the second elongate member 22 are arranged to be brought together so that the opening 32 of the first elongate member 20 receives the waist 34 of the second elongate member. Thereby, the elongate elements 20 and 22 are rotatably connected to each other and form the axis of rotation R, as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
The present invention is not limited to the described embodiments but may be varied and modified within the scope of the following claims. For example, the two elongate members may be rotatably connected to each other in other ways to form a shaft of rotation therebetween, for example, by providing a shaft through the elongate members.
